Great date
May. 3rd, 2010 04:57 pmI had a great, nay kick-ass, weekend. On Saturday Tua and I wrote - I, a sermon and Tua, field notes for class. Then in mid-afternoon we switched gears and did some garden work. Tua got the fence halfway up, and I helped a bit, but mostly weeded. In the evening we had a bonfire with Tua's dad and brothers, and toasted marshmallows and ate s'mores.
After church on Sunday we went to Montpelier for a long-postponed date. We had a light lunch of crepes at The Skinny Pancake, and then browsed bookstores for the next three hours - Rivendell Used Books, Bear Pond Books, and The Book Garden. I finally found a copy (first edition!) of Alison Bechdel's Fun Home, and hit the jackpot with a used copy of Amphigorey, Edward Gorey's first collection of his work. I also got a couple of Jeanette Winterson novels, a volume of essays by Adrienne Rich, a YA book by Terry Pratchett, an Ann Ulanov book on The Feminine in Jungian Psychology and Christian Theology, and an historical mystery novel that got great reviews from both The New York Times and The New York Review of Books. Oh, and three Dykes to Watch Out For collections, one of which I've already finished. I wanted to see what happened in the strips not included in the Essential DTWOF, and besides, Bechdel includes original material as a bonus in almost every book, fun little graphic-novellas.
At the first bookstore, Rivendell, we were surprised by the sound of a parade going by. We went outside to watch - it was a parade for All Species Day, a celebration of all the species of the earth. Folks marched, danced, biked, and skated, some with their dogs, and many wearing fantastic costumes. There was a stag on stilts at the head of the parade, a dozen or so swan flags, some gorgeous butterflies and walking trees, and even some fairies. It was hippie fun for the family, and a delight to see. Only lasted about 10 minutes, but it was worth it!
When we got tired of books (which was around when the bookstores started to close, we went for an early dinner at Sarducci's, right on the Winooski River. We sat on the balcony and had a fantastic three-course meal, complete with honeymoon-like conversation, after which we hurried home, taking our tiramisu with us. :)
Weekends like this are good for the soul, the body, and the marriage, not to mention the personal library.
