Dreaming my herb-garden
Feb. 1st, 2008 03:12 pmA storm rages, distracting me from my work, an exegetical paper on Joel chapter 2. The work has been progressing excellently well this week, and I’m feeling more fulfilled and content than I have in a long time.
But storms always stir me up. I find them exhilarating, and it becomes difficult to bend myself to an extended project. So after 5-10 minutes of work, I spend a couple planning my garden (or writing in my journal, as I am doing now). The must-have herbs include: rosemary, lavender, sweet basil, flat-leaf parsley, dill, sage, and thyme. The first two, which are the ones I’m most excited about are also the most difficult to grow. Especially in a cold pocket of
Others I’d like: hyssop, sweet woodruff, roman chamomile, chervil, lemon balm, lovage, marjoram, and tarragon. Maybe savory. Savory and chervil are used often in Welsh cooking, and I’d like to experiment more with that.
Vegetables: turnip and rutabaga. Turnip started in early summer, rutabaga in late July, perhaps.
Flowers: sunflowers. I envision sunflowers at the western corners of the house, where there is no shade.
Chunks is racing around, mewping, Anonymous 4 are singing songs by Hildegard of Bingen, and icy snow is tinging against the windows. Time to get back to work.
