Priesthood

I've been thinking a lot about the priesthood lately, since a discussion with a friend of mine who is a priest (as is her husband).   This is not for me in my life-work, but in general: what does it mean that we have priests, and that they are the only ones who can celebrate eucharist? This really bothers me.  My friend is extremely non-clerical and critiques the clericalism of the Anglican Communion, and she's recommended Bill Coutryman's book Living on the Border of the Holy, which is about "lay priesthood," or the priesthood of all believers.  Despite her excellent points about fostering different kinds of ministry in the laity, I still have this nagging suspicion that eucharist is any meal of fellowship, and if so, why do we need ordained priests?

Every once in a while a weirdo just comes out of the woodwork in an LJ community.  It's so interesting to see the online personalities interact, especially when it's one of the Christian communities I belong to.  I wonder how old these people are, and what their daily lives look like . . .  I wonder if they'll be applying to Union anytime soon . . .

Nobody likes their job, nobody got enough sleep.
Maybe you just had the worst day of your life -
Well you know there's no escape and there'sno excuse,
so just suck up, suck up and be nice."
